The Goodwash Company are dedicated to exploring the world of natural alternatives. We believe in improving lives through our Goodwash Foundation and also through our online platforms, encouraging the change from man made chemicals to natural remedies. Are all natural alternatives worth the swap? We are dipping into the great candle debate to find out…….. Soy v Paraffin.
Soy candles are made from vegetable wax sourced from the oil of soybeans, whereby paraffin wax candles are made from a substance derived from coal or petroleum – a nonrenewable source that has been shown to contain carcinogenic substances. As soy candles are made from a natural source, they do not produce soot as paraffin candles do – which is known to stain furniture and discolour walls.
As well as a cleaner burn, soy wax is also water soluble, making accidental spills much easier to clean. Trying to remove paraffin wax from carpet is an arduous task that’s made simpler by swapping to a soy candle that can be cleaned up with a little bit of warm soapy water.
Paraffin wax typically burns 30-50% faster than soy wax, as it has a higher melting point. The reason behind the longevity of soy candles is the slower burning time and cooler burning temperature of the soybean-based wax. You may pay more for a soy candle initially, but the longer-lasting burn means you won’t have to buy new candles as often and you can savour your favourite candle for up to 60% longer. Soy wax is also biodegradable, making it an investment that will benefit the environment.
To top off the benefits of soy over paraffin wax, the scent from soy candles is also much stronger. Besides the fact that you don’t get any chemical scents from a naturally scented soy candle, the lower melting point of soy wax means there is a larger amount of the liquid wax to pool around the candle wick. This pool of wax allows the essential oils to evaporate into the room creating a more pleasant atmosphere.
The benefits of soy candles far outweigh the benefits of paraffin wax candles, and we are proud to have created a Luxurious Soy Candle ‘Cannwyl Soia Moethus’ (available in both English and Welsh language) https://goodwash.co.uk/product/candle/ that will infuse your home with the delicate notes of frosted lavender, wild musk and fresh citrus.
