Just when you think it’s all over… well, it’s not!!!

Changing lives for the better. Wales U65s at New Zealand World Cup 2024.

When Goodwash were approached to support the U65’s Masters Hockey we were blown away by the overwhelming gumption of the squads. Hearing about the life changing difference that Masters Hockey has played to the health and well being of the players over the past few years.

Many of which had hung up their wooden sticks over 40 years ago… but have returned to world class hockey to represent our homeland at this year’s Hockey Masters World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.

We asked each of the players what it meant them and how dusting down their sticks at 65 years old has made a difference to their lives. Their brilliant answers are below in their unedited own words for your reading… how uplifting!! Show them your support and give them a follow on socials and watch their games on World masters You Tube!

To play for Wales 65s is a privilege and honour. Masters Hockey came as a lifeline to me when I was 60. I’d previously suffered 2 heart attacks and thought my playing days were over….then along came this wonderful group of women……passionate, supportive, joyous and lots of fun….and great players too! Just when you think it’s all over…..well, it’s not!! Jean Satterley

Playing Masters Hockey has shown that “old dogs” can learn new tricks – although it does take us longer to get them right now, and then remember what we have learned! The fun and camaraderie that comes from being with like minded people, be it players, coaches, supporters, is fabulous and helps us all to work together to show how brilliant, encouraging and supportive Welsh Masters squads are to each other. Gaynor Nash

Masters hockey is about having a wonderful extended family with whom I can stay healthy, physically and mentally. Dee Webb

It gives me great Joy to see women playing the sport they love at an age when their mothers would have been resigned to a very sedentary life. And it makes me Happy. Kerin Bowen

An amazing hockey family, with wonderful friendships. The opportunity to play hockey at a very high level, and at an age I would never have expected to be able to play. A chance to represent my country of which I am so proud. Finally  and possibly most importantly an improvement in my personal game brought about by the high standards of coaching I have received.  Lynne Morgan

Everything in the way that only sport can and even more pride and belief in the Welsh spirit.  It has also given me another incredible wide circle of wonderful team mates, friends, coaches and supporters.  In addition, it has shown me that it is never too late to fulfil your dreams! Masters hockey gives me confidence, comfort and lifelong friends. Pat Holloway

I am so proud to represent  my Beautiful country of Wales at master’s hockey to travel to Cities and Countries that I would never go to and enjoy fantastic experiences. Being part of a motivated team, making great friends from around the world and it puts a smile on my face. Gaynor Gierak

I came back to playing hockey 6 years ago after a 23 year gap. Just playing again felt amazing but playing Masters took it to a different level of enjoyment. Masters 🏑 really has changed my life for the better. I have played county level a long time ago but never could I have imagined representing my country in my late 60s . So feel proud and passionate to be part of the dragon masters family. Jo Price

My heart swells with immense pride, it is a privilege and an honour to play for Wales Masters. Masters gives me friendship, purpose, challenges and loads of fun! Always feel better for being there Jane Bailey

Returning to hockey after almost forty years it seems almost a dream to be playing and representing Wales. The feeling I get from being a team member with a great bunch of women who, defy their age, is the best medicine ever. The muscles might ache and bones creak but I am always looking forward to the next match or training session. Ann Havlin

Being part of the 65s. I often have to pinch myself to check this isn’t a dream! I feel so privileged to be part of this amazing band of women who share a passion for hockey. A text to invite me to be part of masters hockey some years ago changed my life. Apart from the physical benefits of being active the impact on my mental wellbeing was astonishing. I had forgotten how important it was to set aside time for myself. It has rekindled old friendships at the same time making new life long friends. Such a boost for health and wellbeing. Jan Miller

To have been playing Welsh Masters Hockey with such amazing and talented team mates over the years, who never fail to astound me with their dedication and love for the game, is truly something special and exciting. Jan Poulton
